  • Upgraded from legacy LTS 1.39.11 to new LTS 1.43. Made backups and imaged the system disk. Problems encountered:
    • mw:Extension:OATHAuth did not seem to apply its schema changes, or perhaps the schema changes should have been performed in an earlier upgrade. Found workaround of manually running mediawiki/extensions/OATHAuth/sql/mysql/tables-generated.sql in mw:Topic:Yakailc03f0u43c0
    • On ssfwiki:Main Page the mw:Extension:EmbedVideo seems abandoned and was not compatible with 1.43. Noticed there is a fork of it that seems actively maintained mw:Extension:EmbedVideo (fork).
    • On ciumd:Main Page - Consumerium.org development wiki had two stray entries with null values where an article name should have been in its database, but this issue was resolved with knowledgeable and compassionate help from the good people at #mediawiki. Found the rows with 'SELECT * FROM pagelinks WHERE pl_title = '';. The error I got from MediaWiki update.php when "Running migrateLinksTable.php on pagelinks..." and doing "Populating the pl_target_id column": "Wikimedia\Assert\ParameterAssertionException from line 72 of [...]/mediawiki/vendor/wikimedia/assert/src/Assert.php: Bad value for parameter $title: should not be empty unless namespace is main"

  • Upgraded the MediaWiki to 1.39.7, tested a bit that the wiki and plugins work as expected, made and verified backups and took a snapshot. One bump in the road was that the mw:Extension:MatomoAnalytics, which is maintained by the kind folks at Miraheze, no longer supports the old LTS, even though the next LTS is projected to arrive in December 2025. A solution to the problem was to git checkout the last known commit that maintains compatibility with the MediaWiki 1.39-branch, which was git checkout e63a479. Thanks to all who helped, you know who you are.

Serious progress in opposing synthetic filth as the Finnish Criminal Code was improved to provide protection against naked appearance approximation look-alike synthesis attacks. The new law on sexual offenses, now collected into chapter 20 of the Criminal Code, extended the protection against synthesized look-alike pornography attacks from minors to adults also and came to effect on Sunday 2023-01-01. Earlier on the prohibition of distribution and possession of synthetic child sexual abuse material (CSAM) took effect in Finland on Wednesday 2011-06-01. Finally enabled VisualEditor successfully edit

The solution given here phabricator:T270376#7365202 after the breakthrough discovery phabricator:T270376#7364419 by Func needed to be tweaked also with AllowEncodedSlashes NoDecode to stop the mw:VisualEditor REST 404 errors exhibiting when trying to edit subpages. Adding AllowEncodedSlashes NoDecode to the Apache 2.4 config inside of the <VirtualHost>-directive seems to yield a completely functioning VisualEditor setup.

This advice I found in mw:Extension:VisualEditor#Allowing VisualEditor on page titles containing slashes after it was kindly pointed out by an irc-goer in #mediawiki. So the documentation has been improved lately.

So two configuration changes to Apache2 were needed to successfully enable VisualEditor:

for VE to work with URL's with slashes in them

Enabled VisualEditor edit

I finally enabled mw:VisualEditor on all wikis. I'm still getting REST 404 errors with VisualEditor, but I have verified that those exhibit only when trying to edit a subpage. When trying to edit a subpage with VE, it fails with REST 404 when loading the VE, but if trying to create a subpage with VE it fails only after the final "save page".

This is an matter of importance, because mobile users have been unable to edit any pages due to an issue with mw:Extension:ConfirmEdit and mw:Extension:MobileFrontend not quite playing catch with each other.

I was alerted to the issue of no captcha by a user of the Consumerium development wiki on ciumd:User:Jukeboksi/Log/2021#Sunday 2021-02-07.

I filed a ticket on it ciumd:MediaWiki/Tickets/Phabricator T274807 - No CAPTCHA from ConfirmEdit served for users that use MobileFrontend.

I did try to enable VisualEditor on 2021-05-13 but run into 404 problems regarding the REST-traffic, as have many other people. See catalogue phabricator:T266971 - "Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server" (HTTP 404/403) and similar errors (catalog). The weird thing about these 404's was that they did not start to exhibit immediately after enabling VisualEditor, nor did they exhibit consistently.

It seems that the 404 errors with the REST-communication used by VisualEditor are due to old style of apache2 rewrite engine settings.

For the problem of 404 errors in REST-communication I took the solution given here phabricator:T270376#7365202 after the breakthrough discovery phabricator:T270376#7364419 by Func.

This Apache configuration (snippet) in the VirtualHost directive in /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-website.tld worked for wikis where short URLs in the format of /wiki/ and the MediaWiki residing in /w/ and document root is one directory up from /w/

At least in one particular case it turned out to be an Apache2 rewrite configuration issue. Will try it out in my private test wiki and if it works there then I'll enable it in an another wiki and if that works then probably roll out the Visual Editor to all wikis, as that will enable also mobile users to edit the wiki (an CAPTCHA issue of long standing, pointed out by a Consumerium.org development wiki user). Yesterday I figured out a procedure to correctly enable importing in my testwiki and after I got it to work I imported citation templates to the #BCM! wiki (predecessor of SSF! wiki), SSF! wiki and in Consumerium. Since Friday 2019-07-12 it has been occurring to me that a change of plan seems almost self-evident: Don't ban modeling of human appearance without permission, but instead make a huge AI to look at all the porn findable on the Internet. Looking at porn and modeling it will not be hurting the AI.   • Exported the citation templates from w:Category:Citation Style 1 templates, but the import failed due to error on my part (I accidentally imported everything to the Template-namespace, instead of each items default namespace) and probably some missing dependencies. Manually deleted all things imported into the Template-namespace. Installed mw:Extension:Scribunto and mw:Extension:TemplateStyles as advised in #mediawiki @ w:freenode IRC. For the citation templates to work also some Modules need to be imported from Wikipedia, but which and how to get the correct set is a bit unclear atm.
